Last Independent Ruler of Bhimber
Brief info
Raja Sultan Khan Chib was the last independent ruler of Bhimber in the 19th century, remembered as one of the most valiant leaders of the Chib Dynasty. Under his rule, Bhimber rose as a powerful Muslim kingdom in the Dogra hills, stretching its influence from Nowshera to the outskirts of Rajouri, the historic capital of Jammu & Kashmir.
During this era, Punjab was being reshaped under Maharaja Ranjit Singh, who had consolidated the Sikh Misls into a formidable empire. While Ranjit Singh managed to capture parts of Bhimber through political intrigue, he was unable to defeat Raja Sultan Khan directly. Lands briefly lost to betrayal by a relative were swiftly reclaimed when Sultan Khan crushed the traitor and restored Chib authority.
Angered by this defiance, Ranjit Singh dispatched his son Kharak Singh to subdue Bhimber. However, Sultan Khan’s mastery of warfare turned the tides. By drawing the Sikh armies into the mountainous terrain, where they were unaccustomed to fighting, he secured a decisive victory. Kharak Singh suffered humiliation and was forced to retreat, marking one of the greatest Muslim victories against the Sikhs in the region.
Raja Sultan Khan’s reign represents the final chapter of Chib independence. His leadership, courage, and strategic brilliance ensured that Bhimber remained unconquered during his lifetime, even against the might of the expanding Sikh Empire. With his era, the Chib Dynasty, which began with Chib Chand, reached its historic conclusion—leaving behind a proud legacy of valor and resilience that continues to inspire Chib Rajputs today.
