History of the Chib Katoch Rajputs

The Chib Rajputs are one of the most prominent Rajput clans of the Jammu and Kashmir region. Their shajra traces them from Rajanaka Bhumi Chandra and the Katoch royal house of Kangra, one of the oldest royal lines of the Himalayas, to Raja Partab Chand, son of Raja Megh Chand (Megh Chandra II) and founder of Bhimber around 1400. His son, Raja Chib Chand, gave the clan its name, and Bhimber, the Gateway to Kashmir, remained the seat of the Chib rajas for more than four centuries.

Bhimber stands on the historic road between the plains of the Punjab and the Valley of Kashmir. For centuries it was the capital of the Chib rajas and a halt for the Mughal emperors on their journeys to Kashmir. In the early Mughal age Raja Shadab Khan, also called Sandeep Chand or Raja Dharam Chand, embraced Islam. He is revered as Baba Shadi Shaheed. From him descend the Muslim Chibs, who kept their Rajput name, honour and traditions while living by the values of Islam.

Raja Sultan Khan held the heights above Bhimber against the army of Prince Kharak Singh and forced it to retreat: the proudest victory in the history of the Chib rajas.
